GM Focus On Sustainable Rubber

General Motors is a proud founding member of the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber and participated in the first General Assembly on March 21,2019 in Singapore. GPSNR was developed by multiple stakeholders to lead improvements in socioeconomic and environmental performance of the natural rubber value chain. Tire manufactures, suppliers, processors, automakers, NGOs and other rubber users are seeking to align standards to uphold fair business practices, protect resources and improve yields while increasing supply chain transparency.

Most natural rubber comes from small farms. Approximately 85% of natural rubbers comes for 6 million farmers and 90% of them are in Southeast Asia. Given the large worldwide economic impact of rubber production and the consequences of rubber production GM is focused on tracing the value chain from rubber plantations, dealers and processors all the way to a tire manufacturing to address issues like deforestation and improve sustainability.

While at the first General Assembly of GPSNR GM leaders had the opportunity to meets some of the farmers and tap a rubber team. This first hand experience has helped their team to apply a greater focus on ensuring ethical business practices in their supply chain.

The stakeholders of GPSNR is continuing to define the objectives and action plans as they work toward a globally sustainable natural rubber industry.
